"Is there really anything you should do to prepare your lawn/yard for the winter months?"
If you want a beautiful looking, healthy, lawn for next year and years to come, there are a few things you should do to prep your lawn for the cold months soon ahead! They are closer than you think so don't procrastinate before it's too late!
1. When your city shuts the water off for your sprinkler systems, it's best to "winterize" your sprinkler system so that it will last longer. Neglecting to winterize a system can cause leftover water in the pipes of the system to freeze during winter, and crack the pipes costing you possibly hundreds of dollars in expenses to replace parts! - For more information on winterizing a sprinkler system, you can ask your local professionals at Narrowleaf. You also can check your sprinkler system's manual, or the link to Rainbird's instructions on how to do this: http://www.rainbird.com/documents/diy/WinterizationGuide.pdf
2. Autumn season also brings the time to perform an aeration on your lawn. It's best to do this at this time, usually 1x per year this is done. Some experts say to have an aeration done in the Spring and Fall. But at least one aeration will ensure that your lawn receives water, oxygen, and nutrients to the grass roots to help it grow strong and thick. This is done by making small holes in the lawn to let those nutrients into the roots. http://www.steveslandscaping.net/Lawn%20Aeration3.jpg
3. Along with performing an annual aeration, after your lawn has been aerated, it is best helped by feeding it food such as applying fertilizer, which helps the lawn compete against weeds. Watering the lawn after aeration, particularly in areas where drought and high temperatures are common will also help give your lawn the health, thickness, and beauty you love in a luscious green lawn.
